Love And The City – Atlanta | Meet Derek + Lakia Brandenburg | Ponce City Market

January 1, 2019

I have always wanted to take on a personal photography project focusing on things that I love, that would bring me joy & that could help someone else in the process…

I’m so very proud to boast that I was born and bred right here in the BEAUTIFUL city of Atlanta, GA! I LOVE my city! The culture here is like no other and true Atliens know just how special our home really is! I knew I wanted to do a project that spotlighted Atlanta, but for a while, I didn’t know what else to incorporate.

With tons of topics to focus on that are near and dear to my heart, one topic kept coming back to my mind…LOVE & MARRIAGE. (There is a reason I’m a Wedding Photographer folks lol) My Husband & I have been married for 9 years and although we are far from perfect, I know what sustaining a marriage can entail. I think REAL love & marriage needs to be celebrated and given its proper respect. I also think we need to get real about what it takes to have a healthy & happy marriage and the journey to get there. Maybe if people knew the real deal up front, so many marriages wouldn’t end in divorce.

Fusing my love of Atlanta + love & marriage…I gave birth to my passion project…Love And The City!

We’ve all heard that getting married and staying married in a big city such as Atlanta is as hard as finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. This project seeks to dis-spell that myth and showcase REAL LOVE & REAL MARRIAGE growing and flourishing right here in Atlanta, GA! I’ll showcase couples a few other major cities here and there but Atlanta will be the primary city of my focus!

The couples I showcase are hand selected by me. I’ve followed their love story, admired them from afar or just flat out think they are marriage #goals with how they juggle marriage, family & business! I think you could learn a lot from them as well! Still interested? Keep scrolling!

The first feature couple of Love And The City is very special to me! I’ve learned so much from Lakia on how to be a wife. She’s stepped all on my toes A LOT (LOL) but her message has always encouraged me to do better in my own marriage. I KNOW she & her Husband will do the same for you! Engaged to be married or already tied the knot? Lakia is the perfect person to glean from! Check out the Brandenburg’s love filled Portrait session shot by me at Atlanta’s Ponce City Market! Read on to learn about love & marriage, Brandenburg style!!

How long have you been residents of Atlanta? 17 years

How long have you been married? 9 years

What are some of your favorite places to go or things to do in Atlanta? The Comedy Club, LIVE Music, Ponce City Market; Go to our favorite seafood/soul food restaurants; ride around the city, site-seeing

When tough times come in the marriage what is your advice? Address the issue right away, but if you need to take time to get your thoughts together, it’s okay to “got to bed angry” and revisit the issue when things have cooled off.

What do you think is the best part about living in Atlanta? Atlanta is a mini NYC or LA. The energy that’s here promotes growth and elevation. Also, the spirit of entrepreneurship is embraced here and it’s beautiful to so many young, black business owners doing well for themselves.

What is one thing you love about your spouse? We both love how we make each other laugh and have watched each other evolve from young college students (back in the day) to a happily married couple with children.

How do you balance work, children and love? Any tips? Define what balance means for you, create a schedule and prioritize your days. Each week may look different but the key is to create some form of balance so you can live in harmony.

What is one piece of advice you can give to soon to be married couples? Get prepared. Jumping into marriage unprepared is as wise as jumping into a pool and not knowing how to swim. (Sign up for LB’s Teach Me How to be a Wife Masterclass)

Are there any books, workshops or public figures that you recommend that you have helped you in your marriage? Who do you recommend? Koinonia Relationships Workshop with Senior Chaplain Jonathan Grigsby; Books: Picture Perfect + The Tiara by Lakia Brandenburg & The Five Love Languages by Dr. Gary Chapman
